A terrible explosion occurs at a factory; the injured are evacuated. The worst is averted, but this industrial accident triggers a series of macabre events. The top executives who were touring the factory that day are now the targets of numerous assassination attempts. After each attack, a white car speeds off. Its trail disappears at the edge of a forest, a dark alley, or a vacant lot. The mystery remains unsolved. While contracts continue to be signed in the corridors of power, an investigation is launched, private security agents are hired, and former rock stars are called in to help. Everything is shrouded in secrecy and conspiracy. White Volvo unfolds in a bygone 1980s Scandinavia; a world of businessmen sporting forced smiles, tinted aviator sunglasses, ties that hang below the belt, bald heads, and long hair. Following the acclaimed Spa, Erik Svetoft's new graphic novel is a thriller, as gripping as it is hilarious. Who is driving the white Volvo? While horror is still present, it manifests itself in a grotesque depiction of neoliberal society, inherited from a magical realism that flirts with the occult. The author's virtuoso artwork is combined with caustic writing that mimics the excesses of bureaucratic jargon. A mercilessly surreal and absurd thriller.
